OCS English II is a North Carolina Virtual Public School class taught by a virtual teacher on Blackboard.com and by me, the face to face teacher.
OCS English III is a class designed to teach the students the basics of using correct English grammar, spelling, punctuation and text structure as they work on application forms, business letters, resumes, etc. that will be used as they look for jobs.
OCS English IV builds on what was taught in English III and also includes completing their Career Portfolio, which is a requirement for graduation.

What is NCVPS?
NCVPS stands for North Carolina Virtual Public School. I will be co-teaching with a teacher from NCVPS. Her name is Maria Topliff and she works with NCVPS to deliver lessons for OCS English II online. We work together to teach the students with a blended learning situation, which includes face to face teaching from me and lessons online from Ms. Topliff. Students will be in daily contact with Ms. Topliff through a messaging system and announcements.
Course Description:
Students in OCS English II will express reflections and reactions to print and non-print text and personal experiences. They will demonstrate understanding of various literary genres, concepts, and elements. They will apply conventions of grammar and language usage. Students will be required to take the English II Common Core State Exam.
Units covered in this course will include:
Unit 1: Vocabulary: word parts
Unit 2: World Literature
Unit 3: Analyzing Text
Unit 4: Persuasion
Unit 5: Presentation
Unit 6: Cause and Effect
Unit 7: Research-Global Awareness
Supplies Needed:
Three ring binder
Dividers for binder
Pens/pencils
Lined notebook paper
Class Expectations:
Students should arrive on time for class. If a student is tardy, first the teacher will talk with the student. On the second tardy, a parent/guardian will be called. If a student is tardy three times, a referral will be written up and handled by an administrator.
When students arrive they should get their materials ready for work, which includes getting out their three ring binders and something to write with. If a student has missing materials, he/she should ask for whatever they need in time to do their warm-up at the beginning of the class.
Students will do the majority of their work on computers. They should follow CMS guidelines for computer use. Using the computer to access unauthorized sites can result in loss of privilege of computer use. Students should spend their time in the classroom working, not browsing the web for their own personal use. If a student is found browsing the web for personal use during classroom time, they will lose their computer for a period of time and will do work that can be printed off by the teacher.
Students are expected to conduct themselves in such a way that they and their peers are able to pay attention well enough to listen to instruction and create an environment where learning can take place.
If a student is absent, that student is expected to take the responsibility of asking for make-up work when he/she returns to school. Make-up work is due at least 5 days from the day of return. Students who have access to Internet at home can work on missing assignments by logging on to ncvps.blackboard.com.
Grading Scale and Policy:
70% of a student’s grade will be based on tests, major quizzes or projects. 30% of the grade will be based on homework, warm-ups, and daily assignments.
A 93-100
B 85-92
C 77-84
D 70-76
